Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Acronym: DEEC
Head: José Silva Matos
Description:

The backbone of the undergraduate and graduate programs of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of FEUP is an Integrated Master Program (MIEEC) that combines the 1st and 2nd cycles of Bologna. This 5-year program awards the degree of Master (Master) after an integrated cycle of studies with a Dissertation in the final semester. Together with other Master Programs offered by FEUP and a new Doctoral Programme in Electrical and Computer Engineering (PDEEC), a well balanced choice is offered to students wishing to pursue graduate work at FEUP (2nd and 3rd cycles of Bologna).

The Integrated Master in Electrical and Computer Engineering (MIEEC) is organized in three majors (main areas) and several specialization areas (specialization areas) indicated below:

  • Telecommunications major

    • Networks and Coomunication Services
    • Communication Technologies
    • Multimedia Communications
    • Microelectronics and Embedded Systems
    • Audio and Video Signal Processing
  • Automation major

    • Industrial Management
    • Industrial Informatics
    • Industrial Electronics and Instrumentation
    • Robotics
  • Power Systems major

    • Power Networks
    • Energy Markets
    • Renewable Energy
    • Electrical Instalations

2nd cycle programs (Masters) are offered as stand-alone MSc Programmes (Masters) or as specializations of MIEEC. Typically, they include a curricular part and one semester of full-time work on a dissertation. They are 2-year long but an applicant with a valuable CV (relevant academic background or professional experience) may see the duration of the curricular part substantially reduced.

For students wishing to pursue a PhD degree, FEUP offers Doctoral Programs (3rd cycle of Bologna) with a minimum duration of 3 years (typically 4).

Doctoral Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering (PDEEC)

Doctoral Program in Sustainable Energy Systems (PDSSE)

The Department is also actively involved in a Doctoral Program in Telecommunications offered jointly by the Universities of Porto, Aveiro and Minho (MAP-Tele).

All the above Doctoral Programmes have close ties with similar ones in the American Universities that have established cooperation agreements with the Portuguese Government and FEUP: MIT, Carnegie-Mellon (dual-degree) and Texas (Austin).
