The Bridges of Porto - a slide show

In 1809 a great disaster occurred here when the people of the town tried to escape to the invasion of the napoleonic troops. Some boats sunk and pressed by the crowd in panic, the people could not avoid to fell to the river and thousands of people were killed.

Some months later the french troops burned the entire bridge.

But the people of the town was now acquainted to this facility and as soon as the french invasion ended a new and even improved bridge of boats was made.

Now a memorial in the emplacement of the bridge, permanently lightened with candles, evokes the souls of those that were killed in the 1809 disaster.
