The
mission of the Educational Program on Sustainable Energy Systems (SES)
is to promote a new generation of sustainability aware leaders in Energy
Systems, and to generate and communicate new knowledge in energy systems core
areas. Our focus is on combining a multidisciplinary effort at the levels of
energy systems analysis and conception, in the context of Sustainable
Development.
Graduate
level training in SES prepares students to do research that will:
•
Create new knowledge through R&D, promoting innovative product development
and technology integration in sustainable energy systems where energy demand is
fulfilled with a minimum use of non-renewable natural resources, considering an
wide diversity of situations across the globe;
•
Promote new forms of interaction between universities and enterprises, government,
and society for the identification and implementation of sustainable energy
policies and technological innovations.
PhD
students will
be engaged into research projects and units of FEUP-based R&D institutes
such as INESC-PORTO and INEGI. Students will be encouraged to network
with MIT Portugal students in other MPP centres and students with a FCT grant
may enjoy the possibility of prolonged stays at the MIT.
FEUP
participates in all the three main R&D areas of the MPP SES program:
FEUP
and its associate R&D institutes INESC Porto and INEGI Porto develop
original Research on the core areas above through fundamental and applied
research to Cities, to Advanced Electric Grids and to the Built Environment in
the perspective of Energy Sustainability.
The
courses are open for holders of a Master degree, graduated in Mechanical, Electrical or other
Engineering or Natural Sciences degrees recognized as relevant by the
Scientific Commission of the program.
The
director of the Sustainable Energy Systems focus area of the MIT Portugal
Program at FEUP is Professor Manuel Matos, from the Department of Electrical
and Computers Engineering.
The
curricular plan of the SES DAE and PhD accommodates a wide variety of study areas,
covering the three areas of the SES program: Energy Planning and Policy,
Sustainable Built Environment and Advanced Electric Networks. The detailed
curricular plan for each student is jointly defined in early September after an
interview.
In
2014/15 the courses open for registration were as follows:
