Professor J.F. Silva Gomes obtained his graduation in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Porto in 1971, followed by an MSc (1974) and a PhD (1977) degrees in Mechanical Engineering at UMIST/University of Manchester (United Kingdom). He has been working at U. Porto for more than 40 years, where his teaching and research interests were mainly related to Solid Mechanics, Impact and Experimental Mechanics. He was also involved in the creation of INEGI-Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management, having been its President for more than 12 years, and was Vice-President of LAETA (Associate Laboratory for the areas of Energy, Transport and Aeronautics) from 2006 to 2012.

Retired from his position as Full Professor of Mechanical Engineering since March 2011, he still continues to give a regular contribution to the University of Porto and INEGI, as Project Manager, Scientific Adviser and Conference Organiser (co-chair of IRF and M2D conferences series, since 1999, chair of CLME congress series, since 1999, and chair of ICEM10/15/20 EuraSEM conferences). He was awarded the position of Emeritus Professor of the University of Porto in March 2016.

Joaquim Silva Gomes is currently Emeritus Professor of FEUP (University of Porto), Honorary Member of APAET (Portuguese Society for Experimental Mechanics), Vice-President of EURASEM (European Society of Experimental Mechanics), and adviser of the A3ES (Agência de Avaliação e Acreditação do Ensino Superior). He is/was member of the Editorial/Advisory Boards of several scientific journals: International Journal of Earthquake and Impact Engineering (ISP), International Journal of Mechanics and Materials in Design (Springer) and Experimental Mechanics Review (APAET), among others.
