Mobility

FEUP has partnerships with national and international institutions of higher education, encouraging the participation in programmes, activities and cooperation projects and promoting the academic exchanges of students and professors with partner institutions.

FEUP also promotes and supports the establishment of relations with important companies, contributing to the professional integration of FEUP students

Johanna Johnsson, Jönköping University Foundation | Sweden

Erasmus Student - Master in Materials Engineering and Mechanical Engineering

I chose to do my exchange at FEUP, because I was applying for exchange with my best friend, and both of us wanted to go to a country none of us had been. We also wanted a city with good weather and close to the sea, so we made a list of different cities and Porto became our first choice.

We had a integration week before school started, but I missed most of the events and because of covid most of them where online. But I had a buddy dinner and that was really fun. I also find that my classmates and professors are really friendly, they always tell me about food and drinks I should try and places to visit, and some of them even offer to show us erasmus students around.

FEUP is one of the best engineering schools in Portugal, it is pretty close to the center and we have had a lot of practical classes which is fun. It is quite different compared to home but fun with some change. The classrooms are nice and I also like the canteens, we don’t have any cheap ones in Jönköping. But the wifi connection could get better, I think.

When you are studying abroad you make new contacts from all over the world, you get to develop your English skills, you get friends for life, you get to learn about their culture etc.

Porto is a beautiful city with old Architectual buildings and amazing views and good food by the Douro canal. The metro gets you from point A to B and makes living here easy. A lot of exchange students go here so it is easy to make friends here aswell.

I will definitely advise other students to take a period of studies at FEUP.

Camilo Santana Melgaço, Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica de Minas Gerais | Brasil

Mobility Student - Informatics and Computing Engineering

My experience in FEUP has been great, and a little different than the common. That is because on my 4th day in town, I had an accident and broke my leg, fracturing my femur. I stayed a few days recovering at the hospital, and the amazing people at the Cooperation Unit (thanks Ilídia and Patrícia!) helped me through it all, keeping me calm and assured that I’d have all the support needed to complete my mobility. As I had arrived in Porto a couple of weeks prior to classes starting, I didn’t lose many classes. The recovery was fast and I left the hospital on a Friday, and the next Monday I was already going to class.

FEUP is amazing, and I can say this from all points of view. Starting academic and equipment all the way to accessibility wise, the whole campus and the people in it are all wonderful and highly capacitated. And I can say the same of the city. Even in the first weeks, when I was walking around with 2 crutches, I had no problem getting the subway and buses, and moving around FEUP to go to classrooms. There are elevators everywhere, it was way easier than I thought it would be. I am now getting to the end of the semester, and the professors are awesome to learn from, they have great methods of teaching and are aways ready to help when you have questions.

The academic community is very receptive and welcomed me and my roommate very nicely. Our FEUP Buddy – a veteran assigned to welcome mobility students – was awesome, took us to parties to get to know people and places in the city and was always ready to help us. I have only good things to say about FEUP and even with everything I’ve been through in the first days with the accident, I am glad that I came to FEUP to live this amazing life.

Malu Danigo, Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey | Mexico

SMILE Student - Master in Industrial Engineering and Management , Master in Services Engineering and Management and Master in Mechanical Engineering

My journey at FEUP started when I wanted to study abroad and go somewhere I had never been and different. FEUP was in my first 4 options and now I’m very glad I was chosen.

When I arrived to Porto I was amazed by the center, the river and the people, everyone was very nice, and a few days later when I started school at FEUP I had some difficulties trying to arrange my schedule, but at the end everyone was disposed to help you; the professors are really comprehensive if you have something and want to help you if you are having trouble in class, also FEUP had some interesting activities for international students, like international fair jobs, it had been great months in Portugal, and I really recommend to not just travel around Europe, but also know all the hidden gems this wonderful and funny country has.

Jakub Koranda, Czech Technical University | Czech Republic

Erasmus Student - Master in Civil Engineering

I’ve chosen FEUP because of its subjects and because I knew that the University of Porto has really good references. But I didn’t choose FEUP as first option. I chose Portugal and specifically cities close to the shore.

The main reasons for me were Portugal as a country, Portuguese culture, nature and surfing. Also, I wanted to improve my English skills and meet new people.

Cultural differences are pretty obvious, for example in Portugal there is nothing on time. Portuguese people, public transport and timetables are always late.

The best advantage of studying abroad in my opinion is that you’re at foreign country alone and you have to take care of yourself. You must focus on everything and even the easiest thing in your mother country could be a big problem when you're not a citizen.

Life in Porto is really nice and like I said everything is chill and nobody is in a rush. If you used to live like that, life here is really easy and comfortable. I would definitely recommend FEUP for other students because of its organization and approach to teaching.

Anna Vaníková, Czech Republic

Erasmus Student - Master in Services Engineering and Management

MESG is a very specialised degree programme so it’s rare to find one in Europe. That’s one of the main reasons I applied to study at FEUP. I think that integrating into the student community was really easy, especially because of the many student organizations that help exchange students to get acquainted with the community. A big help with the integration process was the language course for beginners organized by FEUP.

The academic environment here is very pleasant and, during my stay in Porto, I didn’t have any trouble at all when talking to students or teachers at the faculty. FEUP is very well equipped and all technical devices and infra-structures are modern. In my opinion, the main advantage of studying at FEUP is the existence of very practical courses.

The advantage of studying abroad is getting to know a new country, to learn a new language, to meet new people and to discover new academic and social environments. Studying at FEUP is a very valuable life experience for me and an opportunity that I would recommend to all Erasmus students.

Alejandro Sánchez, Argentina

Eramus Mundus in Informatics Engineering

I recommend Universidade do Porto to international students seeking for high quality academy and infrastructure.

During my mobility at FEUP I was able to learn from the academics, perform the planned research activities, and participate in social and cultural events, within a framework thoroughly prepared by the Faculty and Erasmus Mundus team at U.Porto. The director of the mobility assisted and challenged me in my research.

In the process, I had a glimpse of how well the Institution works to research develop and transfer knowledge to the industry. Besides completing my PhD, I expect to contribute to my home Institution with fresh ideas taken from this experience.

Another outstanding aspect is the interaction with students coming from different parts of the world. The organization not only takes care of each student wellbeing, but they also foster their integration within this international community. Meetings and social events, among other initiatives, take place regularly.

Porto is simply wonderful: an historic and cultural center with beautiful landscapes and an excellent transport system. People are kind and they are always ready to help you. The University periodically organizes visits to the main cultural attractions. Without any doubt, a mobility period at FEUP – U.Porto is an opportunity you do not want to miss.

Bruno Botelho, Brazil

Mobility Student in Industrial Engineering and Management

I decided to study at UP because of the name and the quality of the university.

It was one of the best moments in my life until now. To live in a diffrente culture, with diferent people, for me it was the most important thing during the mobility.

I earned a schoolarship from Santader Bank to study during one semester, and so, I decided to come to Porto.

The infra-structure of the university is really nice, you have everything that is necessary and people are very friendly.

What to say about Porto? It`s a fantastic city, I fell in love with this city that welcomed me during one semester. You can have everything that you need, parties, flights, museums, culture, nature, etc. I`m extremely conviced that Porto is one of the bet cities to do a Internship, I recommend you.

Germano Neto, Brazil

Mobility Student in Civil Engineering

The exchange experience is something out of any kind of expectation. We can imagine a dreamworld, but live the exchange experience is much more intense than this.

I hosted a french guy for one year in Brazil, and he became a very good friend of mine. So the idea of doing the same thing, came to my mind, and Oporto was my choice.

FEUP gave me a new vision of what students should do. My teachers showed me a new way to live the academic experience. And this experience is something that I will take with me the rest of my life, and I will always defend this university and this country as my second home.

Thanks to Conceição Alvim, Belmira Neto, Paulo Pinho, Brandão Alves, and to all the others teachers thad I had, I should also thank all my classmates, especially the class of Masters on Planning and to all my friends from the Students Associations.

All this people, and this country made this year the best year of my life.

Maria Florina Gorcea, Romania

Eramus in Industrial Engineering and Management

It was love at first sight! I liked FEUP ever since I arrived. It was my only option for Erasmus, mainly because I expected rich education, good weather and nice people. What I found here might have been better, even though April was a rainy month.

The city is great to live in. It is not crowded and plenty of cultural activities take place often enough. Moreover, you can have a lot of fun, Portuguese party style. You have to experience it to know what I am talking about!

Next issue that made me choose Porto was that People are truly welcoming and kind here. I am pretty sociable and I never thought I would have integration problems, but it was easier than I expected. Portuguese are friendly. There are associations that help mobility students such as ESN. For sure you will soon enough develop a friend’s network of your own because the city is not that big and it is common that people from all over the world, representing totally different universes, get to know each other and become friends.

From educational point of view, FEUP is again a good choice. If you are looking for modern equipment and interesting approach on teaching, this faculty will fulfill your expectations. I studied Industrial Management here and I can say I enjoyed the experience. One of the things I liked, personally, was the fact that teachers are helpful. So far I can say most of them were actually really nice to me as an Erasmus student. Anyway, this does not mean that the amount of work is low. At FEUP the most difficult thing is probably finding the balance between work and fun because you will have enough of both.

All in all, Erasmus in Porto is amazing! I had one of the best experiences in my life.

Joanna Adamska, Poland

Erasmus Programme - Marketing

I started my Erasmus adventure in January. Frankly speaking, I wanted to do my Erasmus in England, but my home faculty didn’t have an agreement with any school there. Since I had heard many good things from other Erasmus students about Porto and its university, I chose FEUP. I was impressed with the number of marketing courses I could choose from. The classes are very interesting, even the theoretical ones.

Now I can definitely say that it was the right decision to come here.

Before the start of the semester, I had three weeks of intensive Portuguese. I was living in “Residência Jayme Rios de Sousa” with only Portuguese people, most of them from FEUP. That’s why I had an easier start here. I found some really good friends, and they were my guides at the beginning. Thanks to them, I got to know about the faculty’s extra-curricular activities. I’ve joined a jazz band, and I’m attending a dance course and a Portuguese course, which are all great. Erasmus life is also easier when you have a tutor; mine is a member of BEST, and he has been great with me. Thanks to him, I always know about nice things to do, like parties, travel opportunities, etc.

Being an Erasmus student is incredible: it feels like a movie. I am living with people from all over the world, visiting many cities and countries. I get to know so many cultures and a little bit of the Portuguese language. Life here goes so fast that I was sad when I had to buy my return ticket to Poland.

What would I recommend to potential exchange students? Don’t hesitate to study at FEUP! Take the opportunity which will change your life. I also had some doubts, but I went for it and now I am extremely happy!

Ferdinand Christiaan Leeger, Holland

Erasmus Student, Minor in the Mining Department

I have been to many countries and spent long days away from home, but after my first moments in Porto, I felt like these were my streets, a place with the right people and the beginning of an adventure all on my own. I have met many great professors who give their very best to the students, who make their job a part of them, who give fascinating lectures to their students and who bring magic to the academic experience. The mingling of different cultures and the sense of letting go is very different to the static environment which often characterises my country. I see so much heart and dynamism in the people here, something I missed in the Netherlands. Besides newly found friends, I have also found love.

Erasmus has a certain romance to it, it is adventurous and bold. Every day you can discover new places and new people. Between your trips and your cultural experiences, you have your obligations, which are hard to meet sometimes. It is chaos and it is romance at the same time; it is an experience that changes you; it is a big personal development.

As I said before, I fell in love… I fell in love with FEUP and I fell in love with all the wonderful people I have met… I fell in love with Porto!

Mikk Lellsaar, Estonia

Erasmus Programme – Electrical Engineering

FEUP is a nice place to study in, especially if you come from the other side of Europe. Portuguese students and professors are very friendly and helpful, and they do everything they can to make me feel at home. Although there are few lessons in English, the professors are usually very flexible and may give you private lessons in English if the level of your Portuguese is not high enough to follow the lectures. Projects and team works are challenging and exciting, but everything can be done with the co-operation and help of Portuguese students.

I’m also very pleased about the fact that you can do so many activities at FEUP. I especially like sports, so immediately started playing volleyball with the FEUP student team. Training is hard but fun. The most important thing is that I have made lot of good friends, and that makes me feel like I’m a real Portuguese citizen and not just another tourist passing through.

There is the academic side of life here, but there’s also the cultural side. The environment is amazing here in Porto - you have the impressive Atlantic Ocean, where you can surf and swim, and the landscape by the river side is beautiful and peaceful. Porto is a city that gives you a lot of energy.

Camila Baldasso, Brazil

Mobility student from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul - PhD in Chemical Engineering

My story at FEUP began on March 2010. I arrived at the city of Porto to complete the PhD I had started in Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. I was accepted by CEFT (Transport Phenomena Research Centre– Chemical Engineering). FEUP provided me with all conditions I needed for my mobility studies period, including a Support Office for foreign students, which made my adaptation to the student community a lot easier. I soon realised that FEUP is an institution that relies on its students and invests in their potential. The faculty has modern equipment and laboratories, as well as highly qualified teaching staff.

I also came across BRASUP – Brazilian Students Association of the University of Porto. That helped me greatly with integrating into Portuguese society.

This mobility experience is providing me with a much richer education than I had imagined. FEUP is an institution that doesn’t focus only on teaching, but also research, politics, philosophy, arts and culture. It resembles a temple of knowledge. FEUP is indeed a universe yet to be explored by students. Every day, I get to know people from all over the world; I make friends, exchange experiences and discover new cultures.

The quality of the faculty together with all its cultural diversity enriches this mobility period and proves that it is really worth to be here!

Carolina Belchior, Brazil

Mobility student in Industrial Engineering and Management

My Erasmus experience began when two Portuguese students came on an exchange programme to Brazil. I had always wanted to have an experience like that, but I must confess that I was quite afraid of change. When the opportunity came up, I applied without even being sure of my decision. Time went by and, slowly but surely, I kept on making preparations. I suddenly realised I was already here in Porto, Portugal. In fact, I can’t really find the words to describe such an experience!

Porto is an amazing city, very welcoming, with a nice climate and with beautiful places like Ribeira. And the Porto inhabitants? I just love them! Everyone received me with open arms.

On the professional side, I have no doubts that this experience will make a difference to my future. The market is getting more and more competitive and I believe employers value the capacity to adapt easily to changes. Besides this, being in Europe allows you to travel a lot and enables you to get to know new people and new cultures. I would advise this experience to everyone: do go on the Erasmus programme and, if possible, go to Porto! You will not regret it!

Pavol ¦pavor, Slovakia

Erasmus student - Master in Mechanical Engeneering, Robotics

My story began at FEUP in 2011, when at our department of Automation and production systems in ´ilina I met one student from Porto who studied at FEUP. They introduced me to the University of Porto and the faculty as well and of course the city of Porto. So I decided to study at FEUP for several reasons:

  • FEUP is one of the best faculties in Europe
  • Its students and graduates are recognized around the world
  • The weather in Portugal is perfect

Integration inside the student community and inside my department is easy for students, because Portuguese people are very helpful and friendly.

The advantage of studying abroad is to know a new country, meet new people and discover a new culture where people have a completely different world view.

Studying at FEUP is a very rare life experience that I would recommend to all Erasmus students. The school environment and the students are very welcoming and you can find everything necessary for your work and your assignments. Porto is a beautiful city, it won the European best destination 2012 award and there is always something to discover.

I would like to thank my classmates, especially Andre Compush for helping me and all of my friends, who made my Erasmus experience so amazing. Thanks to Everyone!

Nils Decker, Germany

Erasmus student - Master in Services Engineering and Management

Studying in Porto was an outstanding opportunity for me - to broaden my mind, to learn from a different, international perspective, and also to find friends from several countries all over the world.

I was enrolled in the MESG program at FEUP, which is focused on service engineering and management, and I appreciated a lot the close contact to professors, the small and intense group work experience with Portuguese colleagues (which was very helpful for my language skills and my general integration here in Porto) and the lively student world at the faculty.

During my stay at FEUP I always felt welcome in the Erasmus Office, which might give you another reason to choose Porto for your studies abroad!

Cuihong Wen, China

Erasmus Mundus - Lotus project (research group in Visual Computing and Machine Intelligence)

Eight months studying in Porto was a great experience for me that gave me a broader view of Europe and an unforgettable memory to my personal life. I really enjoyed studying there.

I was lucky to get the Erasmus scholarship. The international office staff kindly helped me integrate inside the University. Meanwhile, my boyfriend helped me a lot at the beginning of my arrival. He is also an exchange student from China. We will never forget our stay there and we will cherish the memory of this experience for the rest of our lives.

The high teaching quality of the professors and their knowledge of English were of great help in the learning process. The facilities and the equipment are perfect. You can see printers everywhere in FEUP and there are many computer rooms for students.

The nice weather and the beauty of the city make me like living in Porto very much. In addition, the food in Portugal is delicious. I strongly recommend the egg tarts!

Finally, I would advise anyone to study at FEUP. Actually I have already helped a friend of mine in China to apply for the same program next year.

Andrej Kollár, Slovakia

Erasmus Student – Master in Civil Engineering

I think that Porto is a very interesting and beautiful city, full of friendly and helpful people who are doing everything to make me feel at home. It offers a great number of events which serve as a way to get to know the local culture better.

FEUP has modern laboratory facilities and highly qualified teachers. They are very flexible; even if a course is being taught in Portuguese they give all necessary support to non-Portuguese speakers. I’m also quite glad that FEUP has so many possibilities to practice sports.

I chose FEUP because I wanted to try something new and my friends in my home country recommended me this experience. Now, it’s my turn to recommend this experience, this city and this faculty to other Erasmus students. This is also a great opportunity to meet people from all over the world. I am very glad that I made this choice!

Andrej Babinský, Slovakia

Erasmus Student – Master in Civil Engineering

When I finished my first degree I decided to study abroad through Erasmus program. University of Porto was my second option but after all I am not disappointed. The aim of my journey was to improve my language skills and become more independent. FEUP was the right decision as it is the Engineering Faculty of best quality in Portugal.

At the beginning I had a lot of difficulties, because everything seemed impossible. Luckily all subjects of my study program are in English language and it was not necessary to learn Portuguese.

The teaching and equipment quality in FEUP is of high level. The professors are very kind, helpful, and patient. I love the library because it is a very good place for studying any kind of literature.

There are a lot of advantages of studying at FEUP and abroad, namely improving the language skills, learning different methods of study, making friends from all around the world, and having a whole new and valuable life experience.

The University of Porto has several sport facilities and activities for foreign students like me. Porto is very nice city, located near the ocean and with a lively student life. There are many cultural differences, but people are very kind.

I would gladly advise anyone to study at FEUP, because it offers such a good education. It will for sure be an important experience in your life.

Kulzer Robert, Germany

Erasmus Student – Master in Informatics and Computing Engineering

After spending some time in Brazil and learning some Portuguese, Portugal was my first choice for my Erasmus semester. Since FEUP is considered to be one of the most popular educational institutions in Portugal it was clear to me to apply there. All my FEUP professors have been incredibly helpful and friendly. Thanks to the practical oriented courses getting in touch with other Portuguese students was easy. Additionally the library and computer equipment are well organized and help a great deal to acquire the theoretical background to the perform in the lab works.

For me the Erasmus semester has been an unforgettable time. I found lots of new friends from all over the world and enjoyed exploring Portugal with them. Thanks to student networks you've various opportunities to discover Portuguese culture, from musical point of view to the amazing night life to the fascinating beaches, ideal to surf. Oporto itself is simply astonishing. I fell at home the day I got there. People on the street are friendly and help you where they can.

I'd like to encourage everyone to experience FEUP and Porto themselves, I think my fellow Erasmus students will agree. It'll probably be your best semester, ever.
