Doctoral Program in Spatial Planning

General information

Official Code: 5851
Acronym: PDPT
Description: The Doctoral Programme is offered by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Oporto and the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra. The programme is designed to foster advanced knowledge in the field of spatial planning, aiming at explaining, resolving and supporting future public policy agendas. It combines three principles as follows: the definition of a set of core competences in advanced knowledge on spatial dynamics, spatial planning and applied scientific research; the emphasis on specialised areas of knowledge associated with the existing research skills found in both schools; and a flexibility principle, allowing the adaptation of curricula to the specific needs and characteristics of candidates.

Certificates

  • Doctorate in Spatial Planning (180 ECTS credits)
  • Advanced Studies (3rd cycle) in Spatial Planning (60 ECTS credits)

Courses Units

Thesis Project in Planning

PDPT003 - ECTS

Provide students with the skills and competences to prepare a research proposal and the corresponding work plan.

Contemporary Spatial Dynamics

PDPT001 - ECTS
Provide students with a deep knowledge and with advanced R&D skills and competences on the subject of spatial dynamics processes.

Identify and describe the main concepts and factors that constrains spatial dynamics. Develop criteria and capacity for analysis, interpretation and comparison of different dynamics and processes of spatial transformation.

Planning Theory

PDPT002 - ECTS
The objectives of this course are to provide students with a solid knowledge of the evolution of planning thinking, and of the different theoretical and practical approaches, as well as of the nature of the complex and cross disciplinary contemporary debate.

Urban Design

PDPT008 - ECTS

Provide the students a thorough understanding of the urban morphology and the plural role of urban project and urban design, as well as starting the approach to the urban design dimensions -  bioclimatic/sustainable urban design; acessibility for all; public speces and active ageing - in order to prepare technical students to the development of their profession, and also those who choose the scientific research career or teaching.

Decision Support Methodologies

PDPT005 - ECTS

Students should be aware of the meaning and usability of data analysis and decision support quantitative methods. Students will learn quantitative methods and techniques.

Research Methodologies

PDPT004 - ECTS Students have to develop knowledge on how to structure and conduct a research project and disseminate the results.

A broad view of the process will be presented from the choice of the subject, relation to main authors and organizations working on the subject, the struture of the work and methodology and ending in the dissemination of the results.

Housing Planning

PDPT009 - ECTS Provide students with a deep knowledge of the housing system and the housing policies, both in the Portuguese and in the European context. To develop capacities of critical reflection on the theoretical and methodological challenges of housing studies.

Planning and Environmental Assessment

PDPT006 - ECTS
This course is designed to provide PhD students in Spatial Planning with a solid and advanced knowledge on the nature and extent of current environmental problems and related policies within a framework of global change. In this context, attention will be paid to climate change issues and to the specific role of planning in environmental enhancement and the ecosystem balance of human settlements. Students will develop their own capacities for analysis and interpretation of environmental phenomena, and its social, economic and cultural dimensions, as well as the capacities of diagnosis and formulation of policies, in particular with profound spatial implications.

Urban Regeneration

PDPT010 - ECTS Provide students with a deep knowledge and with advanced R&D skills and competences on the subject of urban regeneration.
Develop criteria and capacity for analysis, interpretation and comparison of urban regeneration experiences.
