Admissions Requirements

Candidates must meet one of the following conditions:

  1. Hold a bachelor's degree in Physics, Applied Physics or Physics Engineering, or a bachelor's or master's degree in a related area, considered appropriate by the scientific committee of the Master in Physical Engineering (M:EF);
  2. Hold a foreign higher academic degree in one of the areas referred to in the previous paragraph, having a 1st cycle of studies organized in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process.
  3. Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized by M:EF Scientific Committee as meeting the objectives of a Bachelor's degree in Physical Engineering or similar;

For candidates who do not hold the degree at the date of application, but who are capable of completion by the date of enrolment in the study cycle, evidence of the curricular average at the date of application must be provided, as well as the curricular units missing to obtain the Bachelor's degree.

Criteria for Selection and Ranking

The ranking of the candidates will be made according to their Final Classification (CF), in decreasing order, based on a weighted average of three components: Final Mark of the candidate (MC), Prestige of the University conferring the Degree (PEE) and Adequacy of the Degree to the Physics Engineering profile (AC). The Final Classification (CF), rounded to tenths, will be calculated through the following formula:

CF = (MC +1,5 x PEE) + AC


  1. For graduated candidates, the final Mark (MC), expressed in a scale of 10 to 20 values, rounded to the units, is given by the final classification of the Bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS). In the case of a finalist student with three enrollments in a bachelor's degree, MC is given by the weighted average of the classifications obtained from the curricular units (UCs) from the first year to the fifth semester (150 ECTS), after obtaining approval. In such case, MC, rounded to the units, will be calculated through the following formula:

    Nj=1 clj x ECTSj / 150

    in which N represents the number of approved UCs from the 1st year to the 5th semester, clj is the mark obtained at UCj, and ECTSj is the number of ECTS credits corresponding to UCj. The use of a fixed denominator prioritizes those candidates with five semesters of the course completed. In cases where the student has more enrollment than the number of years of duration of the undergraduate course, and does not have a complete degree, at the date of the application, the MC calculation formula becomes:

    Nj=1 clj x ECTSj / 180

  2. The calculation of the Prestige factor (PEE) of the University conferring the Degree is given by PEE = ln (R / r), where ln is the natural logarithm and R and r are, respectively, the world rankings of the University of Porto and of the University conferring the Degree of the candidate, expressed at http: //www.webometrics.info.
  3. The sum MC+PEE is majorated to 20 values. Student with CF lower than 10 values, cannot be admitted.
  4. d) The Adequacy of the Degree (AC) represents the appreciation of the M:EF Scientific Committee on the "degree of coverage in fundamental scientific areas" presented by the study plan of the candidate Bachelor’s Degree. This evaluation will focus on the adequacy of the previous training to the goals and study topics of M:EF. Depending on the adequacy of previous training, the candidates are grouped into two sets: for candidates typically possessing Bachelor's courses in Physics, Physical Engineering, Technological Physics, etc., AC will equal 0 values (group A). All other related courses are penalized with -1.5 values (group B). The distinction between candidates from Group A or Group B will be assessed by the presence or absence, in the candidate Degree, of more advanced topics in physics or physical engineering (undergraduate level), such as, for instance, quantum mechanics, statistical physics or condensed mater physics. It will be up to M:EF Scientific Committee to attribute each candidate to group A (AC=0) or group B (AC=-1.5).

Tie-break criteria:

In the event of a tie, the following tiebreaker criteria will follow:

  • First. The Final Mark of the candidate Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Second. The adequacy of the previous training to the characteristics of M:EF.
  • Third. In the event of the need for a third criterion, candidates will be interviewed.
