Components
The components of the doctoral programme are a dissertation and courses aimed at providing adequate training in areas of Biomedical Engineering, particularly those required for the dissertation.
Framework
The programme is organized according to the regulations of the University of Porto for doctoral degrees. It is run in parallel with the masters degree in Biomedical Engineering, thereby allowing an adequate coordination between both, namely in terms of courses.
Probation year
The candidates are required to complete a probation year, after which their final registration as doctoral students may be accepted, subject to approval at the selected courses and adequate progress in the research work.
Advisory Group
The Faculty of Engineering appoints an Advisory Group for each candidate, composed of the supervisor, co-supervisor and two other professors.
Areas of specialization
The areas of specialization are the following: Biomaterials; Biomechanics; Clinical Engineering; Medical Signals and Images. Supervision is provided by professors of the Faculty of Engineering and of other faculties, in view of the interdisciplinary nature of Biomedical Engineering. Part of the research work may be carried out abroad.
Scientific Committee
The Scientific Committee is constituted by the following professors of the Faculty of Engineering:
Mário Adolfo Barbosa (President; DEMM)
António Torres Marques (DEMEGI)
Fernando Jorge Monteiro (DEMM)
Joaquim Marques de Sá (DEEC)
Pedro Guedes de Oliveira (DEEC).
