After first and MSc degrees in FEUP and IST/UTL, in Mechanical Engineering, earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), University of Southampton, in 1998. Currently is Associate Professor with "Agregação" at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. Lectures subjects in the area of Applied Mechanics, mainly related to dynamics.
Research field: non-linear dynamics of structures, mainly with geometrical non-linearity, but with some incursions into plasticity and electrostatic forces. Has been and is involved in research projects related with non-linear dynamics and with laminated composites. Increasingly interested in aeroelasticity.
Author or co-author of over sixty international journal papers, presented several communications in conferences and other international meetings. Lectured courses related to non-linear dynamics at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), "Erasmus Mundus Master of Mechanical Engineering (EMMME)", Barcelona, 2007; CISM advanced school “Exploiting Nonlinear Behaviour in Structural Dynamics”, Udine, 2010; Summer School “Advanced Methods of Nonlinear Dynamics”, Polytechnic University of Marche, Ancona, 2019. Was Honorary Research Fellow or similar at diverse European institutions.
Chairman of EUROMECH Colloquium 483, “Geometrically non-linear vibrations of structures” in 2007, and of EUROMECH Colloquium 603, “Dynamics of micro and nano electromechanical systems: multi-field modelling and analysis” in 2018. Has been involved in the organization of other conferences and symposia, and acted as co-editor of journal special issues. Member of the Editorial Board of Mathematical Problems in Engineering, Hindawi, from August 2010 to March 2014; is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Journal of Theoretical, Computational and Applied Mechanics, https://jtcam.episciences.org/. Served at ENOCC European Nonlinear Oscillations Conference Committee – EUROMECH (2012-2020). Received award Engo António de Almeida in 1994. Received an honourable mention in 2004 and was awarded the Young Researcher in Applied and Computational Mechanics Award in 2006, from the Portuguese Association of Theoretical, Applied and Computational Mechanics.
