Apresentação Pessoal

João Manuel R.S. Tavares is graduated in Mechanical Engineering from University of Porto, Portugal (1992). In 1995, he obtained a M.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, in the field of Industrial Informatics, also at University of Porto. In 2001, he obtained a Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the same University, and in 2015 the Habilitation in Mechanical Engineering.

From 1995 to 2000, he was researcher at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (INEB). Since 2001, he has been senior researcher at the Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (INEGI).

He was Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEMec) of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) between 2001 and 2011, Associate Professor in the same department until July 2021, and since then, he has been Full Professor in the same department. He has been the Head of DEMec since 2023.

Since 2001, he has been supervisor and co-supervisor of several M.Sc. and Ph.D. thesis and post-doc projects. He is co-author of more than 650 articles in national and international journals and conferences and co-editor of more than 60 international books and guest-editor of several special issues of international journals. Also, he has been involved in several research projects, both as researcher and as scientific coordinator.

He has been co-chairman of various international conferences, including ICCEBS 2013, CMBBE 2015/2018/2019/2021, CompIMAGE 2006/2010/2012/2014/2016/2018, ESB 2022, VHP 2022, VipIMAGE 2007/2009/2011/2013/2015/2017/2019, EUROMEDIA 2008, BioDENTAL 2009/2012/2014/2016/2018, IMAGAPP 2009 and TMSi 2010, and of numerous mini-symposia, workshops and thematic sessions, and a member of organizing and scientific committees of several national and international conferences.

He has been a member of several national and international journal editorial boards, Editor-in-Chief of the T&F “Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering” journal, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the T&F “Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering: Imaging & Visualization” journal, and Co-founder and Co-editor of the Springer “Lecture Notes in Computational Vision and Biomechanics” book series.

He is co-author of the Best Paper published in 2012 in the Elsevier "Pattern Recognition" journal, co-author of the Best Review Paper published in 2014 in the T&F “Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering” journal, won the Incentive to Research Award from the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, and the Scientific Excellence Award from the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto in 2015 and 2020.

His main research areas include computational vision, medical imaging, biomechanics, scientific visualization, human-computer interaction and new product development.
