Objectives
BACKGROUND
This course focuses on applying analytical methods to take better decisions and provides students with tools for modelling and optimization that will be very useful in various roles in several types of organizations (industry and services).
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
The main objective of this course is to convey to students a global vision of the principles and techniques used in rational decision-making processes with multiple criteria and risk and uncertainty situations, stressing, in particular, the role of quantitative methods and qualitative issues.
Learning outcomes and competences
Endow the students with the skills to:
- identify and address decision problems in a structured way;
- build models of decision problems;
- identify and use analytical methods to obtain solutions for the models that should act as a support for informed decisions;
- use spreadsheets to analyse and obtain solutions for the models;
- formulate multi-criteria decision problems and apply adequate decision support methodologies in uncertain environments.
Working method
Presencial
Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)
Basic skills in spreadsheets (basic informatics).

Eligibility for exams
To access the appeal season, the students must obtain a minimum classification of 20% of 12 points in the distributed assessment component.
In addition to the previous requirement, students must follow FEUP's general assessment rules to attend this curricular unit.

Calculation formula of final grade
Quizzes in class (closed book) (0 to 9 points)
The sum of the scores obtained by each student in the assessment exercises proposed for resolution at the end of each lesson, removing the two lowest scores.
Each exercise will be rated from 0 to 100%.
Computer quiz (closed book)(0 to 3 points)
The computer quiz will be rated from 0 to 100%.
One exam (closed book) (0 to 8 points)
The exam will be rated from 0 to 100%.
Minimum rate in the exam: 20%
A student will be approved if they get a score of at least 20% on the exam and the final classification equals or exceeds 10.
Examinations or Special Assignments
Students who have no obligation to attend classes and who did not make the quizzes, the intermediate quiz and intermediate tests will make a final exam (closed book).
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
These exams will be closed book.
Classification improvement
APPEAL SEASONIn the appeal period, students will be able to improve the continuous assessment and the exam, and the best mark between the one obtained in the normal period and the one obtained in the appeal period will always be counted. All exams are closed book.
