Objectives

The student should apprehend the essential of the knowledge available on the theme of the thesis.

Learning outcomes and competences

 This requires the acquisition of skills concerning the internet reference search, the interrelations between the scientific works analysed, the awareness of the sequence of progress on the domain in the recent past and the ability for developing a synthesis of the studied matter. The elaboration of a preliminary plan of the thesis requires the ability for formulating the problems and questions that are critical for the progress of the science in the domain, based on the synthesis previously developed.

A report on the state of the art has to be written and a literature survey on the theme of the chosen PhD has to be carried out. A preliminary plan on the thesis has to be presented.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:

There are a wide variety of dissertation themes. The curricular unit will introduce the dissertation subjects and will provide a discussion on related subjects.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching involves discussion sessions with the participation of the supervisor, the student and the lecturer responsible for the course. The student grading is based on the report with the state of the art on the theme selected for the PhD thesis.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The execution of the state of the art report, on the basis of the literature survey combined with the discussion of selected issues, permits an adequate background for the development of original research on the theme and for writing the thesis.
