Objectives

This curricular unit enables students to develop their understanding of quality management and how quality systems affect the organizations performance and results.

The first subject addresses the evolution of quality in the business context so that students realize the importance of quality management systems for the organization ́s performance. The understanding of this subject is complete with the third topic, where the ISO 9001 criteria and the audit assessment of the quality management systems are analysed in the context of the Portuguese System for Quality. The last subjects cover the methodologies for quality planning and the application of statistical tools, contributing to develop the skills for analysis and problem solving and also for planning quality improvement

Learning outcomes and competences

Students are expected to:

• have a clear understanding of the concepts and the requirements of  quality management systems; recognize the advantages of their implementation and analyze the assessment procedure of the systems.

• be capable to plan the quality in the product design and in the manufacturing, using quality tools.

• apply in a structured manner, quality tools and statistical analysis for problem solving in a business context.

• develop literature research skills toward the problem solving cases.

• develop team work and oral communication skills and critical thinking.

Teaching methods and learning activities

In classes, the subjects are presented using slides and videos, discussed and related with technological and management issues learned in other courses; practical industrial cases are also discussed to facilitate the students understanding. Cases and problems are analysed and solved autonomously by students based on bibliographic research and discussion in groups. The results are presented and discussed with the class and the teacher. A visit to an industrial unit will be arranged for students to analyse the practical implementation of ISO 9001 criteria. Also, invited speakers will present practical issues of the quality management systems improvement.
