Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Acronym: DEEC
Head: Manuel Pereira Ricardo
Mission:
DEEC's mission is to provide a comprehensive education to FEUP students in the areas of Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering, providing them with skills to develop innovative, sustainable, and socially responsible solutions to real-world problems.

Our engineers are trained with substantial practical knowledge, supported by a solid theoretical basis in the fields of Electrotechnical Engineering and Computers. Critical thinking, the ability to solve very complex problems, and communication skills are also considered primary objectives of our training.

FEUP's DEEC is an outstanding and internationally recognized leader in education and research in Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering. With a century of experience, its engineers occupy prominent and relevant positions in the most varied economic sectors, causing an impact unique to society.

Description:
DEEC is responsible for organizing a set of courses of different academic cycles, whilst also collaborating with other FEUP departments and UP faculties, as well as external higher education institutions in several undergraduate and graduate courses. Among other courses, DEEC is responsible for organizing, managing, and teaching the first cycle course L.EEC which assigns the Bachelor's degree in Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering, the second cycle course M.EEC which confers the degree of Master in Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering and the PDEEC third cycle course which confers the degree of Doctor in Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering.

DEEC ensures a dynamic, collaborative, and inclusive learning environment that promotes creativity, motivation, and lifelong learning so that its engineers can tackle complex engineering challenges and have a real impact on society.
DEEC's teaching staff is committed to excellence in teaching, cutting-edge research, innovation, and technology transfer, interacting with various actors in the economic sectors at regional, national, and international levels and encouraging interdisciplinarity. Its strong commitment to collaborating with industry partners and other academic institutions allows it to offer its students unique opportunities to work on real-world projects and gain hands-on experience

Disciplinary Areas

DEEC's activity is organized into 18 subject areas grouped into 5 large clusters that cover the fundamental aspects of Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering. These areas deepen knowledge, establish relationships with each other and with other areas of engineering and constitute the pillars of engineering that are revolutionizing the 21st century, including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, 6G, quantum computing and communications, robotization, cyber-physical systems, or energy. Such topics are investigated and taught within these 5 areas, with knowledge based on international research projects in which DEEC participates and leads. DEEC's disciplinary area groups are the following:

Automation Area related to the study, design, and development of automated systems and processes, with wide application in various sectors of society, such as transport and health, among others. Automation systems can be simple machines, such as automatic doors, or complex systems, such as robots and systems using artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. Automated technology makes it possible to provide processes with greater security and efficiency, as it generally eliminates human error.
Electronics and Computers Area that covers the study, design, and development of electronic components, circuits, and systems, which can range from microprocessors and sensors to integrated circuits and embedded systems, as well as the design and implementation of computer software and hardware, with a view to improving performance, and the functionality of computers and related devices. It comprises a set of specialized sub-areas, including digital and analog electronics, semiconductors, computer architecture, and artificial intelligence. Application domains include consumer electronics such as smartphones and laptops, medical devices, data communication, transportation systems, industrial automation, etc.
Energy Study and development of technologies and systems for the generation, distribution, and consumption of energy, focusing on renewable sources of energy, namely solar, wind, hydroelectric, biomass, wave and geothermal. This field aims to optimize energy systems to ensure energy efficiency, reliability, stability and robustness of operation and safety, as well as sustainability, seeking to minimize environmental impacts. It encompasses different specialized sub-areas, such as renewable energy conversion technologies, energy storage systems, renewable gases (biogases and hydrogen), smart grids, electric mobility, energy markets and regulation, or energy policy, among others.
Signals and Systems This area covers the study and development of mathematical models and techniques for analysing, processing, and transmitting signals. Signals refer to any measurable quantity that varies over time or space, namely sound, images, and data. Systems can be any device or process capable of handling or transmitting signals. Signals and systems are essential components of many modern technologies and applications.
Telecommunications Study, design, and development of technologies and systems for transmitting information over long distances, including voice, data, image, and video communications. Telecommunications engineers aim to develop technology and optimize systems to ensure they are reliable, secure, efficient, and affordable, improving the quality and speed of communication. This field comprises a set of sub-areas, such as communication technologies and protocols, computer networks, wireless communication, mobile communication, network security, multimedia technology, etc.
