Structural Division

Acronym: SE
Head: João Paulo Miranda Guedes
Description:

The Structures Division (SD) brings together professors, technicians, researchers, fellows, and postgraduate students dedicated to the analysis of structural behaviour and the design of Civil Engineering Structures.

It ensures the teaching of the curricular units in the Basic Sciences of Physics-Mechanics and Structures, of the Bachelor's (L.EC) and Master's (M.EC) degree programs in Civil Engineering; a specialization in Structures and Geotechnics is offered in the M.EC. It is also responsible for teaching most of the curricular units in the Master's in Civil Engineering Structures (MESTEC) and various units in the Doctoral Program in Civil Engineering (PRODEC). Additionally, it participates in teaching curricular units in other study cycles, specializations, and advanced studies at FEUP.

Scientifically, the SD promotes and develops fundamental and applied research, both analytically and experimentally, in the field of static and dynamic behaviour (e.g., seismic and wind actions), linear and nonlinear (material and geometric), of common and complex structures built with different materials. It is also dedicated to the study, analysis, and development of construction techniques for new structures and the rehabilitation and strengthening of existing structures.

In addition to teaching and research, the SD is frequently called upon to collaborate in consulting services to public and private entities.
