The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto believes that the research and development (R&D) activity is a primary objective to acquire new knowledge. Furthermore, this knowledge must be, more and more, used to answer the needs and demands of the social and economical environment in which the faculty is involved.

In line with the guidelines from the University of Porto, FEUP aims to valorize the knowledge developed by its teachers, students, staff, investigators and other collaborators in its projects, thus promoting the investigation and creation in the faculty. In this context, the Regulation of Intellectual Property (IP) of the University of Porto appears as an objective to protect R&D activities and the exploration of the results obtained, promoting the use and transference of technology into the society.

In this sense, through the Cooperation Office, FEUP supports its academic and scientific community in the field of Intellectual Property working closely with UPIN - University of Porto Innovation - the Intellectual Property Support Office (GAPI) of the University of Porto.

UPIN has the following competencies within the field of Intellectual Property: to identify R&D results with the potential of valorization; to ensure a professional management of Intellectual Property by means of the GAPI, carrying out the processing of patent requests and the registration of other modalities of IP; to promote training actions on Intellectual Property and Technology Transference.

Reporting an invention

Every FEUP's teacher, investigator and collaborator must report his/her invention to UPIN or to the Cooperation Office of FEUP. They must fill in and sign the "Invention Reporting" form. More info at the UPIN website.
