Board of Regents

The Board of Regents comprises 15 members, distributed as follows:

nine representatives of FEUP's teaching or research staff holding doctorates;
three representatives of students, from any of FEUP's cycles of study;
one representative of FEUP's technical or managing staff;
two illustrious external individuals co-opted by the remaining members of the Board of Regents.

The Board of Regents has the following powers and duties:

to organize the election of, and to elect, the Dean of FEUP, in accordance with the law, with the FEUP statutes and with the applicable regulations;
to approve regulations for its proper functioning;
to approve changes to the FEUP statutes;
to review the acts of the Dean and of the Executive Board;
to propose initiatives deemed necessary for the proper functioning of the institution;
to perform other duties it is assigned by law or by the FEUP statutes;
to decide on the creation, merging, transformation and termination of FEUP research and development units, after hearing the opinion of the Scientific Council.

The Board of Regents, after receiving proposals from the Dean of FEUP, has the power:

to approve the electoral regulations of the Scientific and Academic Affairs Councils, after hearing the opinion of these Councils;
to approve the proposals for FEUP's strategic plans and to approve the action plan for the Dean's term of office of four years, sending them to the Rector;
to approve FEUP's organic regulations;
to approve FEUP's general scientific, pedagogical and financial guidelines;
to create, transform or terminate FEUP organizational subunits;
to approve the proposals for FEUP's plan of activities and for the annual budget for expenditures and revenues, sending them to the Rector;
to approve the report of activities and the annual accounts, sending them to the Rector;
to issue opinions on other matters submitted to it by the Dean of FEUP.
