FEUP’s strong reputation for scientific research, development and innovation is enhanced not only by its membership of international networks, but also by all the work carried out in its immediate surroundings on the Campus Asprela. There are some 60 thousand people working on this Campus in the field of science and technology, and it is also where the Technological Pole of the University of Porto’s Science and Technology Park (UPTEC) is installed, providing support for more than 35 innovative companies.

Besides being the location of several other higher education institutions of the University of Porto, universities and polytechnics, the Asprela Campus also has a central hospital and an oncology institute. In addition, it houses a number of laboratories belonging both to businesses wishing to invest in innovation, as well as nationally and internationally recognized research institutes. There are countless projects that demonstrate FEUP’s capacity for joint innovation with interface institutes such as the Porto Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering (INESC TEC), the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management (INEGI) and the National Institute of Biomedical Engineering (INEB), among others. The Fraunhoffer Institute has also decided to install its Research Center for Assistive Information and Communication Solutions (AICOS) on the Asprela Campus.

Companies like CIN, Sonae Indústria and Efacec have all invested in laboratories on campus which are seeking to develop innovative ideas. IBM also chose to install its only Center for Advanced Studies (CAS) in Portugal here at FEUP, oriented to applied research in Engineering, Management and Science of Services - Solutions for Smart Cities.

The Asprela Campus is a predominantly technological environment, where the strong presence of engineering, health sciences and entrepreneurship is highly conducive to the process of innovation.
