For the second consecutive year, ABB in Portugal have given a monetary award to a student from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto. This distinction, as established in an agreement between ABB and FEUP, is intended to reward the student who has achieved the highest rating in a Masters dissertation whose topic is related to one of the three major areas of activity of the ABB Group: renewable energy including “smart-grids”, industrial automation and robotics.

This partnership with FEUP forms part of a set of initiatives which arise from the mission concept that the ABB Group has adopted for itself: being a good corporate citizen. Such behaviour is clearly driven by determination, respect and responsibility, and is put into practice by engaging in activities that advance the progress of the communities in which the business operates, particularly in the area of educational development.

Moreover, one of the strategic imperatives of the ABB Group is innovation, supported by consistent investment in Research & Development - 1.3 billion dollars annually, 7,500 researchers and engineers, collaborating with 70 universities around the world, in particular among them the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

ABB in Portugal awarded two young engineers whose academic performance was distinguished within the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto, one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in the country, characterized by its high standards and rigour. The ABB/FEUP agreement governing the annual allocation of the ABB Award, which is intended to continue and possibly extend to other kinds of academic initiatives, thus expresses at a local level the global commitment of our Group towards recognizing actions of merit and talent – these, after all, being the pillars that support the success of our own organization.
