Currently the Dean of FEUP is Professor Rui Calçada.

The Dean of FEUP has the following powers and duties:

• to represent FEUP in the Senate, in the remaining bodies of the institution and outside of the institution;
• to preside over the Executive Board and over the Scientific and Academic Affairs Councils;
• to approve the timetable and schedule for academic activities, after hearing the opinion of the Scientific and Academic Affairs Councils;
• to carry out deliberations of the Scientific and Academic Affairs Councils, when they are binding;
• to exercise any disciplinary authority delegated to him/her by the Rector;
• to submit for the approval of the Board of Regents FEUP's strategic plans and the action plan for the four years of his term of office, after hearing the opinion of the Scientific Council;
• to propose FEUP's general scientific, pedagogical and financial guidelines to the Board of Regents;
• to submit the budget and plan of activities to the Board of Regents, as well as the plan of activities and accounts;
• to propose the creation, transformation or termination of FEUP organizational subunits to the Board of Regents, after hearing the opinion of the Scientific Council;
• to draw up conclusions on the evaluation reports of FEUP research units and of those research units including FEUP teaching or research staff;
• to propose the creation or alteration of programmes to the Rector, after hearing the opinion of the Scientific and Academic Affairs Councils;
• to propose the maximum number of new admissions and enrolments to the Rector, in accordance with legal regulations;
• to issue the regulations necessary for FEUP's proper functioning;
• to approve the distribution of work for the teaching staff, taking into account its financial and operational feasibility;
• to decide on the appointment and hiring of staff, in any capacity;
• to raise and manage revenues and to authorize expenditures and payments;
• to decide on the acceptance of moveable property;
• to appoint and dismiss, in accordance with the law and with the FEUP statutes, the persons responsible for FEUP departments, programmes, research units and services;
• to exercise the duties delegated to him/her by the Rector;
• to exercise the remaining duties he is assigned by law;
• to approve the regulations of organizational subunits.
