Research & Development projects

The Unit has been responsible for 17 R&D projects, since 1994; 14 of these were funded by the European Commission, under programmes JOULE, Energy and Sustainable Development and others. They involved as partners research institutions and companies from all over Europe and beyond. The total budget managed by the Unit exceeded 3.5 million euros.

List of main R&D projects run:

bullet

RD-SBES - Research & Development on Sustainable Building Energy Systems and Retrofitting (EU contract ref. PIRSES-CT2010-269205, 2011-15)

maintenance of long-term partnerships between several European and Chinese universities through the common development of several sustainable energy technologies for heating, cooling and distributed power generation as well as the promotion of techniques and strategies for building renovation

bullet

POWERSOL - Mechanical Power Generation Based on Solar Thermodynamic Engines (EU contract ref. INCO-CT2006-032344, 2007-10)

development and optimisation of a solar-driven system to generate mechanical energy, using different solar collector prototypes; mechanical energy may be used for electricity generation or desalination (POWERSOL website)

bullet

MEDITERRANEAN-AIRCOND - An Advanced Solar-Driven Air Conditioning System for Mediterranean Climate (EU contract ref. INCO-CT2006-032227, 2007-10)

development, construction and testing of an air conditioning system driven by novel vacuum tube solar collectors, coupled to a special ejector/exchanger and a two-phase storage (MED-AIRCOND website)

bullet

TRI-GEN EGD - A Novel Tri-Generation Electrogasdynamic Converter System (EU contract ref. ENK6-CT2002-00686, 2003-05)

development of a novel system to generate electricity, heating and cooling, based on the integration of an ejector refrigeration cycle with an electro-gas-dynamic power converter, able to directly convert thermal energy into electricity

bullet

SOLAR LOUVRE - Solar Louvre Building Integrated Collector (EU contract ref. ENK5-CT2000-0330, 2001-03)

development, construction and testing of a solar collector integrated in building shading devices of the louvre type

bullet

HYBRID-CHP - A Hybrid Combined Heat and Power System (EU contract ref. ENK5-CT2000-0080, 2000-03)

development, construction and testing of a prototype system to generate electricity and heat in buildings, by using a micro-turbine and heat pipe solar collectors which integrate boiler gas recovery

bullet

ECOCOOL - Ecological Cooling for Buildings by Combining a Closed Wet Cooling Tower With Chilled Ceilings (EU contract ref. JOR3-CT97-0195, 1997-2000)
