The research on this work will focus on state estimation tool for hybrid AC/DC networks, coupled and decoupled networks. Therefore, this document started by reviewing the SCADA system components and architecture, from Human Machine Interface (HMI) to Master Terminal Unit (MTU) and Remote Terminal Unit (RTU), followed by the SCADA impacts on protection of AC and DC sides and on the power system reliability. A review on state estimation supported with examples is presented in the document. Finally, the current challenges of SCADA and the main objectives of this research for hybrid AC/DC networks state estimation are clarified.

The main objectives are to demonstrate the risk factors for improper AC line protection operation as well as the influence VSC‐ HVDC has on different types of transmission network protections.
The actual power system protection with the integration of a VSC‐ based HVDC will be simulated and tested using in a typical AC transmission network under different scenarios of operation: (1) normal network operation, (2) faulty network operation. The assessment will be performed in CAPE‐ Computer Aid Protection engineering software with the actual protection scheme in the commercial protective relay in a real world case.

Abstract
The continuous growth of multiple distributed generation (DG) along the distribution networks (i.e. Medium and Low Voltage) induces  multifaceted  technical  challenges,  that  can  be  substantially addressed  by  novel  control  architecture  schemes  beyond  centralized strategies and the fit and forget doctrine. The active participation of DG essentially drives the network to pave towards the Smart Grid concept.
This phd work will entail to trace the verge that is evolving in future power networks.  A  particular  focus  on  Low  Voltage  Distribution  Network (LVDN)  conceptual  architectures  as  well  as  the  proliferation  of breakthroughs  in  substation  and  distribution  automation  are additionally  portrayed.  Among  the  PhD  work,  will  be  developed advanced control schemes of LVDN including the controllable loads of residential clients, as well as taking advantage of DG to maximize their integration and respond the technical repercussions provoked by them.
