Courses Units

Plasma Technology and Applications

PRODEF030 - ECTS

Essay

PRODEF027 - ECTS
Critical knowledge of the state-of-the-art of the research theme to be addressed in the PhD Thesis.
Capacity to identify an open question and design, under supervision, a research plan to answer it.

Lasers, Optics and Photonics

PRODEF031 - ECTS

Materials and Devices for Energy Harvesting and Storage

PRODEF032 - ECTS
The goal of this CU is that student develop theoretical and applied knowledge on materials engineering, especially those dedicated to energy harvesting and storage. Some examples of advanced materials are those used in electrodes, electrolytes, separators, collectors, catalyzers, photovoltaics, thermoelectrics, piezoelectrics and magnetocalorics with applications in batteries, capacitors, fuel cells, photovoltaic panels, sensors, magnetic coolers, etc.

Optical Materials and Applications

PRODEF035 - ECTS

Instrumentation Projects

PRODEF036 - ECTS
1. Identify current trends in advanced instrumentation.
2. Describe the scope of development and applications of instrumentation projects (IP) to: a) the industry; b) research organizations; c) large international infrastructures.
3. Understand and be able to contribute to the development stages of an IP: a) conceptual design; b) preliminary and final designs; c) assembly, integration, and testing; d) operation.
4. Develop an overall view of IP, including a) objectives; b) specifications; c) operation, calibration, and maintenance; d) system architecture and design, including subsystems and instrument "error budget"; e) interfaces; f) architecture of optical, mechanical, electronic, and computational systems; g) data analysis, including extraction algorithms and quality control ; h) safety analysis and risk assessment; i) management plan, time planning, budget planning, product trees e traceability matrices.
5. Explain the rationale of a PI subsystem.

Image Analysis and Recognition

PRODEF037 - ECTS
This curricular unit aims to give the students the ability to understand and apply some of the most recent advances in this rapid evolving field of Image Analysis and Recognition. This CU is based on a recommended textbook along with a list of selected original research papers in order to allow the students to follow the advances in the addressed topics. The main topics covered will allow the students to develop abilities and skills in: image segmentation, tracking, image registration, and object and pattern recognition and matching. The CU focuses on the use of the methods and techniques with potential for applications, such as visual inspection, document processing, biometrics and biomedical images.

Micro and Nano-fabrication Techniques

PRODEF028 - ECTS

Microelectronic and Microelectromechanical Technologies

PRODEF033 - ECTS
The objective of this CU is to develop the background knowledge necessary to understand the state-of-the-art of
semiconductor and MicroElectro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technologies, as well as the issues of integrating
mechanical elements and electronics. A comprehensive, semester-long project is assigned, comprising the design of a sensor and the electronic frontend.
This process requires the understanding of analogue design
techniques as well as the basic design-flow used in the fabrication of MEMS devices, providing the integrated view of a MEMS-based sensor and analog frontend design. The basic concepts and circuits for global noise reduction and interface between MEMS-analogueand digital worlds, both at the circuit level and design methodologies, are also addressed for the understanding of the fundamental aspects associated with full system integration.

Entrepreneurship

PRODEF029 - ECTS Nesta UC pretende-se dotar os alunos com as ferramentas essenciais à prospecção, refinamento, avaliação e implementação de novos negócios (incluindo negócios de base tecnológica).
