Advanced Studies in Project in Engineering

Following Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of August 28, which updated several provisions of the Statute of Research Fellows, the new Regulation No. 950/2019, of December 16, which approves the FCT's Regulation of Research Scholarships specifically provides for the organization of non-degree courses within the educational projects of the HEIs and in cooperation with the research units. On the other hand, university education is one of the main axes of the activity of the EIT programs (European Institute of Innovation and Technology).

The participation of young graduates in research and innovation projects within the scope of research units has an undeniable educational value and works as an opportunity to acquire relevant skills for future professional careers. This participation must be achieved through the granting of research grants obtained through the research units belonging to FEUP's ecosystem.

This course therefore aims to include hands-on training in FEUP's educational project, with a strong component of research and innovation, which will equip students with relevant skills for future careers both in companies and in research.

Specific conditions for access/admission to the course/training unit
Hold a master's degree in Engineering or training deemed appropriate by the course's Scientific Committee and present a research work plan that fits into one of the course profiles and that must be hosted by and R& unit of U.Porto's institutional perimeter.

Objectives

The integration in teams led by experienced researchers, around research and innovation problems, typically funded in a competitive context and often in collaboration with other national and international research or business entities, leads to the development of more sophisticated skills such as analysis, synthesis and evaluation in the context of open problems in the specific area and greater maturity as a researcher and as a professional.
The opportunity to work in research laboratories and use their equipment is the best way to absorb their know-how.

Deepening engineering skills through a project-based learning methodology, in the areas of:
  • ENG. METALLURGICAL AND MATERIALS (FCT Research Units: LAETA and INEB)
  • COMPUTER ENGINEERING (FCT Research Units: INESC-TEC, LIACC)
  • MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (FCT Research Units: LAETA)
  • ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL MANAGEMENT (FCT Research Units: INESC-TEC)
  • ELECTROTECHNICAL ENGINEERING AND COMPUTERS (FCT Research Units: INESC-TEC, SYSTEC and IT)
  • MINING AND GEOENVIRONMENT ENGINEERING (FCT Research Units: CERENA and LAETA)
  • ENG. CHEMISTRY, BIOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL (FCT Research Units: CEFT, LEPABE and LSRE-LCM)
  • ENG. CIVIL (FCT Research Units: CONSTRUCT, CITTA and CIIMAR)
  • ENGINEERING PHYSICS (FCT Research Units: CEFT, CENTRA, CF-UM-UP, IPFN, LAETA and CFisUC)
The Research Units will be responsible for developing/hosting project-based learning.

Information

Functioning:
  • EAPE works in quarters starting in the months of September, December, March and June.
  • Project courses take precedence (Project 1 must be done before Project 2).
  • It is only possible to register for one Project course unit per quarter.

Applications:
  • Applications are open from Monday till Thursday.
  • Once the applications have been analysed, they will be sent to the Academic Services (SERAC) of FEUP, which will subsequently contact the students indicating whether or not they have been placed on the course.
  • Placed students will be informed by SERAC of the procedure for enrolling in the course.
  • Only after being contacted by SERAC (usually the next week) can candidates enroll in the course.

A candidate placed on the course will be enrolled in the following quarter, but will be able to enroll as soon as he or she is contacted by SERAC.

Example:
  • Candidate submits application documents on Thursday.
  • Applications reviewed by the Course Director are sent to SERAC on Friday.
  • Candidate is contacted by SERAC on the Wednesday of the next week.
  • Enrollment will correspond to the next quarter, but the student can already present the enrollment statement for the purpose of signing a scholarship.
Note: The work plan must follow the template provided in the application form. Any application whose work plan does not follow the template will be excluded.
