Current position: Full Professor Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). Member of the Civil Engineering Department Council and the Management Board of the R&D unit CONSTRUCT- Institute of R & R&D in Structures and Construction.

Education: Degree in Civil Engineering (Structures) (1988); Master of Structures in Civil Engineering (1992); PhD in Civil Engineering (2001); Habilitation in Civil Engineering (2011). All degrees from FEUP.

Main research interests/skills: Cable Structures, Dynamics of Bridges and Special Structures, Footbridge vibrations and mitigation, Vibration Measurement, System Identification and Structural Health Monitoring, Fatigue Assessment in Metallic Railway Bridges and Structural Health Monitoring of Bridges, Wind Turbines, Dams and Transmission Lines.

Main activities:

Principal Investigator of 6 national or European Research Projects and member of the research team in 14 projects focused on.

Participation in the supervision of 14 concluded and 5 ongoing PhD Theses. Publication of more than 300 scientific and technical papers (137 documents indexed in Scopus, h-index 27, as of 5/5/2021). Author of the book “Cable Vibrations in Cable-stayed Bridges”, SED 9, published by IABSE in 2007 and translated to Chinese in 2012 by CABP.

Involvement in the creation and development of the Laboratory of Vibrations and Structural Monitoring (VIBEST) at FEUP, since 1989.

Scientific and technical consultancy related to cable structures, dynamic tests of large bridges and special structures, design and implementation of vibration control devices, long-term dynamic monitoring of Civil infrastructures and aerodynamic studies.

Other relevant information: 

Associate Editor of the Journal of Bridge Engineering, ASCE, and Journal of Civil Structural Health Monitoring, Springer, and Member of the Editorial Board of the journals: Journal of Engineering, from Hindawi; Structural Monitoring and Maintenance, Technopress; Structural Engineering International, from IABSE).

Expert in international and national Panels of Evaluation of Research Projects and Scholarships since 2008. 

Member of the National Institution of Civil Engineers (Specialisation in Structures), of the Portuguese Society for Experimental Mechanics, APAET, of the Portuguese Association of Structural Engineers, APEE (member of Board), member and correspondent of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering, IABSE, and of the Association for Lecturing of Steel Construction, APK.

Recipient of 24 national or international awards/ distinctions.
