Objectives

This course unit aims to provide students with integrated knowledge in impairments, disabilities and limitations and in technologies which are intended to aid in their elimination and promotion of the social integration of disabled people. This course unit also aims to familiarise students with the combination of technologies with projects and to make them able to assess rehabilitation and accessibility solutions.

Learning outcomes and competences

Aquired competence shall be directed to the following:

To know and apply according to examples, the theoretical concepts about impairments that affect human beings in the sensorial, motor and cognitive areas.

To know and to interpret the several practical consequences of impairments as well as the resulting functional disabilities. To know and to discuss  the personal limitations resulting from impairments and from disabilities and to know the existing medical-social-institutional models for persons with disabilities.

To know how to analyse from the functional point of view the main situations of private, professional or social life and to know the main technical and technological resources universaly available to fight disabilities of sensorial, motor or cognitive types.

To know how to propose technological solutions for disability situations.

To elaborate and present a high quality study over a theme with relevant coverage in the domain of support equipments or rehabilitation services/equipments.

Working method

Presencial

Teaching methods and learning activities

Unit will be based on interactive theoretical-practical classes, with presentation of examples and solved exercises and laboratory classes to execute technological exercises or small projects.
Students will have to carry out outside class time assignments, like monographs, laboratory class assignment reposts ans small projects or problem solving.
Seminars and contact with a relevant public institution of the professional rehabilitation system.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Teste 50,00
Trabalho escrito 20,00
Trabalho laboratorial 30,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Elaboração de relatório/dissertação/tese 25,00
Estudo autónomo 40,00
Frequência das aulas 42,00
Trabalho de investigação 35,00
Trabalho laboratorial 20,00
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

To be admitted to exams, students have to attend a minimum number of theoretical-practical classes and reach a passing grade in the assignments.

Calculation formula of final grade

Evaluation Formula: Final Grade will be based on the weighted average of two components: continuous assessment and written quizzes or exams. Continuous assessment is worth 50% of the final grade, while the written quizzes or exams (2) are worth 50%. The minimum passing rounded classification in all the individual evaluation elements is 50% (10 valores).

Examinations or Special Assignments

Students will have to attend an opcional mid-term test, which will cover half of the program and a final term test. At the season of exams, it will take place a test, which will cover the entire program in two parts. However, students who reached a passing grade in the mid-term and final tests, may optionally attend and answer the questions of one or both the parts of the final test. The tests grade will be based on the average of the best grades of both tests.
Students will be asked to do some assignments outside class time.
In selected cases needing confirmation of the final classification an oral defense may be requested relative to any evaluation component.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students with a special status have to do the assignments and the written tests as regular students but according to their specific conditions.

Classification improvement

Students can improve their grades by attending a special purpose test at recurso (resit) season. Improvement of the grade of the continuous assessment components is not allowed.
