Objectives

The curricular unit is not designed to be an exhaustive survey of the area of digital communications. On one hand, it revisits or complements students’ background in digital communications. On the other hand, it brings to students’ attention some of the new topics and challenges in the area of digital communications.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of this curricular unit, the relevant learning outcomes are:

•Familiarity with the basic principles behind digital communications, digital communications transmitters and receivers as well as conventional coding techniques.

•Introduction to more advanced topics in digital communications namely coding techniques, OFDM systems, spread-spectrum systems and Software Defined Radio.

•Ability to extract information from scientific papers in the area.

•Practice on technical writing and presentation skills.

Teaching methods and learning activities

It is planned that some of the theoretical classes will be crash-courses, where the relevant background on digital communications is revisited. The focus the is shifted to more advanced topics.

Assignments are proposed to students (MatLab/Simulink experiments regarding the subjects covered by the curricular unit).
