Objectives

During this course students wil define the topic and scope of their PhD research. Typically, this consists of characterizing the state-of-the-art on a given subject, and developing a research plan. The output of the work carried out within the scope of this course is the Thesis Research Plan (TRP) to be submitted for discussion with the PhD Committee appointed by the Scientific Committee of the Program.

The main result is the writing and presentation the thesis research plan.

The student must write a report (about 20 to 25 pages) identifying the subject of the thesis, and including a state-of-the-art survey on the proposed topic, together with preliminary results, if they exist, and cronogram with milestones and expected dates.

The document must be submitted by the last day of classes (end of May), in order to allow for its discussion to take place before the end of July.  Requests for extension must be well justified and have the support of the supervisor.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The work in this course will be developed with the help of a supervisor, who needs to be defined as soon as possible.
Each student will submit to the course coordinator an abstract (one page max) describing the topic that will be addressed, before the end of the fourth week of the semester.

    • Text quality: clarity of the writing and correctness of the English;

    • Technical content: quality, pertinence and solidity;

    • References: quality, relevance, and adequate referencing along the text;


  • Quality of the oral defense.



Grading will be from 0 to 20. A passing grade corresponds to a minimum of 10.
